How it counts: the days you leave and return are not absences; only whole days outside the UK count. ILR checks any rolling 12 months under the current rules; citizenship checks 5 years (3 for spouses of British citizens). Excess absences for compelling reasons (such as serious illness) may be treated with discretion and need a case-by-case assessment.
